Material from the "classic" occurrence at Yonghe in Liuyang County of Hunan Province, China is composed of gray-black limestone with contrasting celestite or calcite formations. This aesthetically pleasing stone is used in jewelry and home decor.

These garnets occur as isolated crystals set against a background of white-grayish groundmass, likely composed of recrystallized calcite, wollastonite, or diopside.
