Schorl or schorl is one of several varieties of an important gem known as Tourmaline and it's probably the most common within this group. When raw, it's a black, opaque, needle-like crystal. A polished schorl was once used as a mourning jewel during the Victorian era, but it's rarely used in jewelry in modern times. The largest schorl crystal was found in Overlook (New York, USA). Its weight was 8 kg.
