Material from the "classic" occurrence at Yonghe in Liuyang County of Hunan Province, China is composed of gray-black limestone with contrasting celestite or calcite formations. Yooperlite is a unique and visually stunning variety of sodalite-rich syenite rocks found primarily around the Great Lakes region, particularly in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, hence the name derived from "Yooper" which refers to residents of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This rock gained popularity and intrigue due to its ability to fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light.

Although marketed commercially as "garnet in Limestone", it is more likely a calc-silicate skarn, which typically forms in the contact zone where a silica-rich intrusion undergoes contact metamorphism with limestone. Within this rock, one can often find brown to deep red garnets belonging to the grossular-andradite solid-solution series. These garnets occur as isolated crystals set against a background of white-grayish groundmass, likely composed of recrystallized calcite, wollastonite, or diopside.

Opaque and with vitreous luster, and sometimes with white veins, red Jasper tumbled is highly valued not only for its beauty but also for its ability to take an exceptionally fine polish. The material is mined in South Africa and USA, and it's usually sold tumbled, or in the form of beads.
