4 Ways to Tell if kyanite is Real

Dyed Quartzite, Crackle Quartz, and Calcite are sometimes utilized to mimic natural kyanite. It's recommended to buy from reputable retailers and, if possible, request a certificate from a gem testing laboratory for authentication. Here are some handy tips to help you initially discern the authenticity of kyanite.

1. Check the Color

Real: Real Kyanite typically presents a uniform blue to blue-green color. While Kyanite is generally uniform in color, there may be some variation or streaks, ranging from near clear to darker blue, within individual beads.
Fake: Blue dyed quartzite and crackle quartz beads can exhibit a very intense, vibrant blue that often appears too consistent and unnatural. Dyed quartzite and crackle quartz usually show dye concentrations along fractures.

2. Hardness Test

Real: Real Kyanite cannot be scratched by a glass plate.
Fake: Fake Kyanite made from blue calcite can be scratched by a glass plate.

3. Acid Test

Real: No visible reaction will happen when hydrochloric acid or white vinegar is dropped on real Kyanite.
Fake: Fakes made from carbonate materials like calcite may exhibit fizzing or effervescence when exposed to hydrochloric acid or white vinegar.

4. Acetone Test

Real: Rubbing the real Kyanite with nail polish remover (acetone/ethyl alcohol) won't cause the stone to fade.
Fake: Swabbing the dyed fakes with a Q-tip and some nail polish remover (acetone/ethyl alcohol) might cause the stone to fade. This method may not be effective for some dyed fakes with better colorfastness.
