4 Ways to Tell if hematite is Real

The majority of "hematite" available in the market is actually manmade Hematine, also known as Magnetic Hematite, Hemalyke, or Hemalike. The rarity of real hematite makes it costly, prompting the widespread use of the more affordable Hematine, a ceramic-like material made of barium-strontium ferrite. Here are some handy tips to help you initially discern the authenticity of hematite.

1. Check Product Name

When purchasing Hematite, watch for terms like "Hematine," "Magnetic Hematite," "Hemalyke," or "Hemalike" in the product name. These terms indicate that the item is not real Hematite but rather man-made imitation.

2. Magnet Test

Real: Real Hematite typically has weak or no magnetic properties. While it may be faintly attracted to a magnet, you cannot lift a Hematite crystal with one.
Fake: Hematine-made imitations typically exhibit strong magnetic properties, meaning they can be strongly attracted to magnets and even attract iron-made objects like nails, resembling the behavior of a magnet.

3. Check Natural Imperfections

Real: Real Hematite typically shows natural imperfections such as small cracks or other mineral impurities.
Fake: Fake Hematite is typically flawless, which could be a sign that it is not real.

4. Streak Test

Regardless of its outer color, genuine Hematite stones powder into reddish-brown. Confirm its authenticity by scratching it on white unglazed porcelain or crushing it with a hammer; genuine Hematite always yields a reddish powder. Any other colored powder signals a fake stone.
